In 79 AD, the Roman army built a wooden fort at Castlefield overlooking the Irwell and Medlock Rivers. The reconstructed front gate now made of stone survives today and is one of Manchester's biggest tourist draws. The fort has been abandoned since 411 AD, when the Romans withdrew from Britain.
